Trying to do some research using keyword smart search...

'sport betting' shows 2466 on daily search it's actually around 5
'sports betting' shows 10033 on daily searches it's actually about 429

Is this phrase broad or exact? Just Google or ALL searches?

How do I know? Am I missing something?

Also it is telling me sport betting tips gets 8200 searches a day and this is waaaaay off. All of my data says about 19 and this is broad results.

Also there is no google trend because of low search volume.

Why is this?

If you look at the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, it says there are between 368k and 450k searches per month, depending on the column you're looking at. That is broad match. So that divided by 30 would put you in the range of 10k. And sport betting looks like it's got 60k which would pretty closely match the 2466 number given there. Can I ask where the 5 and 429 numbers you're talking about are coming from?

I determined those 2 terms were broad after doing some research. However I can not explain the results I get for the term, 'sport betting tips'.

I was looking at exact match with Market Samurai and SEO book keyword tool (looks at all sources).

There is no way this term is getting 8200 searched a day...

Where would a number like this even come from?

I really think there should at least be an indication of the type of search data that is displayed if not being able to choose broad/phrase/exact. If I have to double check everything there is not much point.

The KW generation is nice but I need to be able to know what data I am getting as 'hits' are the most important aspect of KW research.

To first answer "Where are these number even coming from?"
All of our data is ultimately collected from Google. But exactly where and how we may or may not be tweaking some numbers I can't really say.

That being said, some of our search volume information has been a little bit dated up to this point. But starting this month (ETA 2 weeks until it is deployed to the site) we will have our search volume information updating on a monthly basis with all of the rest of our data.

So your criticism is valid. If you spot check search volume you can find inconsistencies with what Google says. We will improve this stat soon. We also plan to add in a Cost/Day column.

The real strength of Keyword SmartSearch is find find keywords based on knowing what we know competitors on that keyword are also buying.

Thanks for the reply;

I agree but in my experience when searching with that method for example if I am searching for 'tinnitus' I will get thousands of kw results back with everything related from 'car insurance' to 'hemorrhoids' to' 'plasma tv's'. Since a particular individual could be advertising on hundeds of different niches you get the idea. Now if you could pull research on the campaign level somehow you would really have something!

It's somewhat of a hassle to filter down from the thousands upon thousands of irrelevant keywords to get to the niche I am after.

It's not as easy as you might think when I would want to keep for example "ringing in the ears' but not 'cheap ear rings' or any of the other thousands of possibly related keywords that could show up.

In the end it becomes easier for me to just get results from the Google search based KW tool. At least then the queries are somewhat related to the niche I am after.

Just a thought...

What would be super cool is if you could run these keywords
(the ones the user selects) through the Google search based tool
and verify that it is indeed a related search term.

You could then display only the keywords from Spyfu searchers
that are both in the competitors kw lists but also found in the
Google search based tool as 'related' to one of the 10 or
less original keywords.

You could run the keywords and build a database by only running
the keywords that are not in your DB (or been not been run in x amount of time)
hrough the search based KW tool. Otherwise pull the data from your DB,
but you could use actual customer input to build it.

Initially the load for Google (and your potential cost)
would be large but would decrease dramatically over time

If someone were to get creative I bet a macro could
do this on an individual level.

I know it would be next to impossible for you guys to get that kind of
volume through the tool unless you got really sneaky or just paid
Google for the use of the tool.

Just thinking out loud, but that would be really cool and
eliminate the need to filter anything...

I like that idea. I understand the problem you're describing. We may be able to explore some options to group keywords by campaign as well. All just stuff on the drawing board right now though.

Thanks for the input,
Steve
